EIA 364-31 Standard Humidity test standard introduction 

EIA 364-31 standard tests are designed to assess the stability of materials used in connectors under conditions of high humidity and temperature. 

These materials can be damaged or deteriorated under extreme conditions, so a full assessment is required. 

The EIA 364 test uses an accelerated environmental test method by exposing the sample to high humidity at different temperatures to simulate the actual conditions of use.

Humidity controlled chamber are constructed and arranged according to EIA 364-31 standard requirements to ensure that condensation does not drip onto test samples. 

The humidity controlled chamber also has vents that communicate with the outside atmosphere to prevent pressure buildup. 

In addition, the measurement of relative humidity can be determined by the thermometer comparison method or other equivalent method approved by the purchasing department. 


Test program 

The test sample shall use the specified plug, socket, or matching combination, including contact, wire type, size, and sealing plug. These elements make up the way the sample is joined.

EIA 364 standard compliance tests are classified into three types: Type I for steady-state tests, and Type II and Type III for temperature cycle tests.


Type 1: First, according to Type I, the EIA 364-31 test sample is balanced in a drying oven at 50 degrees Celsius for 24 hours. 

The connector is then installed in the test chamber, ensuring that the wire drops vertically to the connector or halfway to it. 

Finally, the sample was placed in a chamber and exposed to a relative humidity of 90 to 95 percent and a temperature of 40 degrees Celsius.


Type 2: Place the sample in a drying oven at 50 degrees Celsius for 24 hours. Then install the test samples using the normal mounting method and keep them out of contact with each other. 

The sample was subjected to 10 consecutive cycles. Finally, the test sample is removed from the humidity chamber.


Type 3: The EIA 364-31 temperature cycle for Type 3 is similar to Type II, but before starting the test, the sample needs to adapt to the temperature of the internal chamber, where humidity is not controlled. 

The relative humidity was maintained at 85% and the internal chamber temperature began to drop after 16 hours.
