MIL-STD 202 Thermal Shock Testing

MIL-STD 202 Thermal Shock Testing

What is thermal shock testing

Thermal shock testing is an accelerated test that identifies failure patterns due to rapid changes in temperature. The test is designed to simulate the wear that the product would experience under normal conditions or standard use in an accelerated environment. These sudden changes in temperature can cause physical elements to break, crack, or combine in unexpected ways, and thermal shock testing is associated with high rates of temperature change and is the most rigorous of all temperature-related tests. In thermal shock testing, the component or device under test changes from one extreme temperature to another, and the temperature is rapidly stabilized in this test.
Thermal shock testing is commonly used in the electronics industry, aerospace, defense industry, automotive and other fields.

MIL-STD 202 Test standard for thermal shock

MIL-STD-202 establishes a uniform method for testing electronic and electrical components, including basic environmental tests to determine resistance to the harmful effects of natural elements and conditions surrounding military operations, as well as physical and electrical tests. This standard helps determine the material's tolerance to extreme high and low temperatures. The test also assesses the material's ability to withstand the shock of alternating exposure to these extremes. This may be encountered when equipment or parts travel to and from heated refuges in the Arctic, as well as equipment that does not operate continuously in cold areas or during transportation. Therefore, the standard is often used in aerospace, military units.

Test program

The sample should be placed in such a way that the air flow through and around the sample is substantially unimpeded. When special installation is required, it should be indicated. The first five cycles should run continuously. After 5 cycles, at the end of any complete cycle, the test can be interrupted, the specimen is allowed to return to room temperature, and the test can be restarted. A cycle consists of steps 1 through 4 where the test conditions apply. When the sample is transferred from one chamber to another, it should not be affected by forced circulation of air. Whether single or multiple chambers are used, the total effective transfer time from the prescribed low temperature to the prescribed high temperature or vice versa shall not exceed 5 minutes. Direct heat transfer to the sample should be minimized. In the case of multiple chambers, the transfer time is defined as the time between exit from the low greenhouse and entry into the high greenhouse, or vice versa. After the first step. The device shall be transferred to a suitable liquid at the temperature specified in step 2 of the specified test conditions. The equipment shall be kept at high temperature for a specified period of time. These two steps, step 1 and Step 2, constitute a cycle of applicable test conditions. Repeat the required number of cycles without interruption. The conversion time from low temperature to high temperature and from high temperature to low temperature should be less than 10 seconds.

Which thermal shock laboratory provides the best temperature shock test?

JOEO thermal shock chamber operates in a temperature range from -65C to +200C and can switch between extreme temperatures in a matter of seconds. With the built-in viewing window, users can easily observe the product as it moves between different temperature zones. Thermal shock chambers are available in a variety of performance configurations to meet specific test needs. These chambers can accommodate smaller test items, and larger items can be tested using horizontal thermal shock test chambers. JOEO is recognized as one of the best thermal shock laboratories in China. Our test engineers understand the requirements of thermal shock compliance testing. We have the ability to provide temperature shock certification for commercial, military and aerospace products, please contact us directly online if you have any questions, thank you.
